Funk Parade Hosts Free #DontMuteDC Conference and Fundraises for Music Programs

Raised Funk Parade Funds will Benefit Local Music Programs

WASHINGTON DC [April 29, 2019] The DC Department of Funk is excited to announce the addition of the #DontMuteDC Conference, energized by the recent protest against the silencing of Go-Go music in the District. The conference will take place at U Street Music Hall on the morning of Funk Parade, on May 11th, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Funk Parade has made this conference free, adding a text-to-give option for attendees to help raise funds for local music programming through The MusicianShip. Donors can participate by texting MUSICHELPS to 44-321.

“We added the #DontMuteDC Conference because Funk Parade’s mission has always been to celebrate the vibrant music and culture of Washington, DC and taking that away is not an option,” said Jeffery Tribble Jr., Executive Director, The MusicianShip. “The conference is free so we can hear and celebrate all community voices, and we would appreciate the community’s support by participating in our text-to-give campaign that will help provide the resources for local music programs in the city to thrive.”

The text-to-give option is currently live and anyone who wants to make a donation to Funk Parade from their mobile device can text MUSICHELPS to 44-321 Donors can also use the online option here. Donations can help provide after school healthy snacks, music instruction, instrument rentals and more.

The conference is free and will feature musicians, council members, government officials and local activists. The #DontMuteDC Conference will feature four tracks:

  • DontMuteDC: The Movement (A conversation about social justice and the birth of the #DontMuteDC Movement)
  • DontMuteDC: The Culture (A conversation about the vehicles by which the #DontMuteDC took shape – music, art, history, expressiveness – and why they are key to DC’s ephemeral fabric)
  • DontMuteDC: The People (“We All Count, presented by DC Office of Planning”)
  • DontMuteDC: The Housing (A conversation about responsible development, affordable housing, and displacement).
